Greenwich Park

This Saturday, my friend Laura and I were in desperate need of sunshine and the Great Outdoors.  We arranged to meet my friend O in Greenwich.  Greenwich is a fun, beautiful area of London.  The Royal Observatory, home of the Prime Meridian, and the National Maritime Museum are within walking distance of one another, and just beyond the Observatory, there is a lovely park.

Laura and I made our way to the park after a brief stop at the Cow and the Coffee Bean, a coffee shop just inside the grounds.  I can't make up names like that, my friends.

Then we started the steep walk up to the Royal Observatory and the Park.  We had packed a picnic lunch and sat next to a beautiful patch of daffodils to enjoy it.  The picture is of Laura laughing at some goofy thing I said :)

We proceeded to walk around the Park, taking lots of pictures as we went.  Laura is a very good photographer who would love to make it her profession.  I'll share some of the pictures she took later, but on our walk, we also got to enjoy some wildlife!  The cutest squirrels were all around.  One came very close to us on the path, not too worried about human company.  We still had some nuts and fruit left from lunch, so I attempted to coax him closer.  He ate out of my hand!  I was so thrilled!  A few of his buddies came along soon after, so we have a few fun pictures to memorialize the event :)

Look at his little paws holding my finger!!!

The day ended with Laura making homemade paneer korma and fresh chapatis.  Mmm...It was good :)

V&A

The Victoria and Albert is one of my favorite London museums.  It has beautiful displays and the building itself is incredible as well.  The last Friday of each month, the V&A hosts a "Late Night."  The museum stays open from 6-10pm and they do all sorts of improv, live music, small plays, and lots of interactive displays.  Angelina found out about last Friday's and four of us girls decided to go.  It was a really fun night.

Lending a hand...or an arm, where needed.

Angelina dressed up for a photo opportunity

Laura found a ginger mustache :)

The V&A has a courtyard with a large pool in the centre...It looked stunning with the lights!

Clarify before saying "Yes"...

Well, as many of you know, I'm attempting to use my membership at my local fitness centre as a way to make friends in my new neighborhood.  This past week, it may have gotten me in too deep!

I was at my Thursday dance/cardio/aerobics??? (I don't really know how to explain it) class. I started chatting with one of the girls my age and we talking about different classes we've done at the centre, which the good instructors are, etc. One benefit of our fitness centre is that we can also use other fitness centres in the borough.  She mentioned that she was interested in trying a new class at another centre and asked if I would be interested in trying it with her.  I responded with an enthusiastic "Yes!" and the only later thought to ask..."What's the class?"  I should learn to ask before I agree.  M responded by saying that it was called Boxfit.  I figured that meant kickboxing.  Well, that made me hesitate a bit, but I thought, "Hey, I'm here to get in shape and make friends, so why not?"

Then a few days later, I went online to book the class.  As I selected the centre and checked the time, sure enough, there was a course called Boxfit, but it was a Level 2-3 class.  I like to stick with the Level 1 (beginner!) classes, so I was thinking...."Hold on, now...This class is AN HOUR AND A HALF and it's a level 2-3 class?"  I texted M and asked if she realized that it was a more advanced class.  She responded by saying, yes, but when she called the gym, they said it was a lot of pair work and it was easy to a lower skill level than the other participants.  When I heard that it was pair work, I didn't want to leave M in a lurch without a partner, so I figured, "Lord, give me strength" and I signed up for it.

So then, the evening came, and I checked my googlemap and decided to walk to the gym.  Since it was a new location for me, I wasn't sure of the buses in the area, and it was fairly straightforward to walk.    I left my house, and after about fifteen minutes of walking realized that I had neglected to put my Oyster card in my pocket.  I've never NEVER forgotten my Oyster card.  Now I knew I would also be walking home.

I found the gym and checked in at reception, getting pointed at to the right studio for my class.  M showed up shortly after me and we walked in.

Friends, it was not kickboxing.  It was proper boxing.  BOXING.  I had to wear the smelliest germ infested boxing gloves imaginable.  My hands reeked with the most incredible stench when I took them off.  The instructor had such an East London accent that I almost couldn't understand his instructions.  I mostly was paired with M, but for a segment of the time, I had to spar with fellows with names like Prince and Shaz.  All very charming fellows, by the way.  I don't think I challenged them to their full potential, considering their biceps rivaled my head for size, but they were very good and patient teachers.

After a grueling HOUR AND A HALF, I proceeded to walk home.  Out of curiosity, when I got home, I decided to check googlemaps again and see just how far I had to walk.  1.8 miles.  Then the class.  Then 1.8 miles home.

Let's just say I slept well that night!

Around London

I find endless opportunities to laugh at the little oddities of language or mistakes of language as I'm doing my shopping or just walking around.  Here are a few recent ones :)

Shortbread biscuits :)  Just makes me giggle.

Smocked bacon :)

Split.... what?

And oh my....Starbucks in the UK is now selling Red Velvet Whoopie Pies????  That confuses my taste buds!

Dinner Party

I just had a lovely little dinner party at my house, the first of many to come, I hope!  I invited my friend O (from France) and my housemate Laura joined us.  I made a proper American meal.  Laura was right impressed that it was all from scratch!  I made chili and cornbread, with cherry cobbler for dessert.  The chili....well, let's just say there was too much cayenne pepper in it, but O, who loves vindaloo curry, enjoyed it anyway!

O brought an amazing AMAZING dessert as a gift.  She says it's a good quality, like you would get in Paris!  Let me tell you, it tastes as good as it looks!

It's really such an answer to prayer to be able to have friends over now!  I'm having another three friends over tomorrow night as well.  Not sure what I'm making yet though!  I'm so thankful each day for the house that God has provided and for the friend that Laura is becoming.

Thinking of a career change?

Want to be a window washer in London?

Perhaps this will change your mind:

Or from further away...to truly grasp the heights...

I'll keep my job, thanks :)
